The initial rollout is in beta and currently available to Premium subscribers in key markets, including the United States and Canada, with plans to expand further and grow the available catalog over time. Why isn't my video live in the US?
To make a music video available on Spotify in the United States, publishing rights must be fully cleared, and 100% of shares must be registered with the MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective). Your publisher must ALSO have opted in to Spotify's audiovisual license via the Harry Fox Agency (HFA).
Spotify has this in place to ensure writers are properly compensated for their works in the United States according to the Music Modernization Act.
You must also ensure all writers for the song are listed on your video submission so they are properly credited on the music video delivery to Spotify. The writer's names must match exactly with the names registered with the MLC and your publisher.
What you need to do to make your video live in the US:
We act as a distributor and do not provide publishing administration services directly, so you must do one of the below depending if you work with a publisher, or are self-published.
IF YOU WORK WITH A PUBLISHER
- Contact Your Music Publisher. Confirm that your publisher has completed all required rights registrations with the Mechanical Licensing Collective.
- Your publisher must also have opted in to Spotify's audiovisual license via the Harry Fox Agency (HFA). If your publisher needs an HFA account first, they can request one HERE.
- Check for Registration Gaps: You can search the public MLC database to identify any missing or incomplete registrations that could delay video availability.
Symphonic cannot assist with this on your behalf. You must contact your publisher to ensure these steps are taken so your video goes live in the US on Spotify.
IF YOU ARE SELF-PUBLISHED
All publishers (either self-published or via a Pub Admin) need to be participating in the Spotify's audiovisual license via the Harry Fox Agency (HFA).
-
If you are self-published, you may accept the Spotify audiovisual agreement as a non-affiliated writer by registering with the HFA HERE.
NOTE: There is no commission for non-affiliates, and HFA does not represent any of their rights under this license.
You must also register your songs directly with the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC).
ABOUT HFA (Harry Fox Agency)
- HFA is used by publishers or publishing administrators to manage licensing (including Spotify’s direct license opt-in).
