YouTube Features

YouTube is rolling out a suite of release-focused and fan-engagement features designed to keep promotion within the platform, reducing reliance on external pre-save links and helping artists drive stronger day-one performance.

These tools focus on pre-release momentum, fan activation, superfan engagement, and native discovery on artist pages.

1. Pre-Save (Native YouTube Music Pre-Save)

A built-in pre-save button on upcoming releases lets fans save an album or single before it goes live.

Why it’s useful for artists:

  • Helps convert interest into day-one streams
  • Sends fans a notification when the release goes live
  • Keeps the fan journey inside YouTube instead of sending users to external links
  • Supports stronger early engagement around a release

How to navigate to it:

  1. Go to the artist’s YouTube Music profile
  2. Select the upcoming release
  3. Click the Pre-save button on the release page

2. Release Countdown

The release countdown turns an upcoming album page into a promotional hub with cover art and a real-time countdown timer.

Why it’s useful for artists:

  • Builds anticipation ahead of release day
  • Makes a release feel like a live campaign moment rather than a passive upload
  • Encourages fans to return to the page before launch
  • Works alongside pre-save to increase engagement leading into release week

How to navigate to it:

  1. Visit the upcoming release page in YouTube Music
  2. View the countdown timer displayed on the album detail page
  3. Use the same page to pre-save the release if the option is available

3. Enhanced Artist Page Visibility

Upcoming releases can receive stronger placement on the Artist Detail Page through Spotlight Cards and "Upcoming" badges on album shelves.

Why it’s useful for artists:

  • Gives priority visibility to key releases
  • Helps turn profile visitors into listeners and pre-saves
  • Supports release campaigns directly on the artist’s page
  • Makes upcoming music easier for fans to discover

How to navigate to it:

  1. Open the artist’s YouTube Music profile or artist page
  2. Look for Spotlight Cards or albums marked with an Upcoming badge
  3. Select the featured release to open its detail page

4. Release Notifications

Fans who pre-save a release can receive a notification when the music becomes available.

Why it’s useful for artists:

  • Reminds fans to listen as soon as the release is live
  • Supports stronger first-day streaming activity
  • Helps convert fan intent into immediate action

How to navigate to it:

  1. A fan pre-saves an upcoming release
  2. YouTube Music sends a notification when the release becomes available
  3. The fan can tap the notification to open the release directly

5. Exclusive Fan Content

YouTube is also introducing features that let artists share exclusive content, such as thank-you videos or behind-the-scenes clips, with engaged fans.

Why it’s useful for artists:

  • Creates stronger relationships with core fans
  • Gives artists more ways to reward engagement
  • Extends promotion beyond release day
  • Helps build a deeper sense of community

How to navigate to it:

  1. Fans engage with the artist and their releases on YouTube
  2. Eligible fans may receive exclusive content through YouTube or YouTube Music
  3. Access may appear through notifications or artist-related content surfaces

6. Exclusive Merch Drops

YouTube is testing ways for artists to offer limited or exclusive merch opportunities to top fans.

Why it’s useful for artists:

  • Creates an additional revenue opportunity
  • Rewards superfans with exclusive access
  • Helps turn fan engagement into direct artist support
  • Adds urgency and excitement around release campaigns

How to navigate to it:

  1. Fans interact with the artist’s content and releases
  2. Eligible users may see exclusive merch offers on supported YouTube surfaces
  3. They can select the merch offer directly from the artist experience

Beta Availability

As of now, releases may be eligible to use YouTube’s pre-save functionality while it remains in beta, with a broader rollout.
