An ISRC is an “international standard recording code” and identifies a particular recording of a track. All releases are required to have and assigned ISRC. At Symphonic, we provide these codes for you when creating your release.
Also if you were with a record label and/or with a previous distribution company and you've wondered what your ISRC codes are or were, you can use this resource!
A UPC is a 12-digit “universal product code” and is similar to a barcode or serial number. It provides your release a unique identity. All releases are required to have a unique UPC and we take care of assigning them to releases.
How do I get a UPC or ISRC?
Symphonic clients can get a UPC or ISRC code automatically from our system during the release creation process, this is included as part of our service.
Using Existing UPC and ISRCs?
If you have your own UPC or ISRC codes you can use these instead of codes provided by Symphonic.
In the event that you are wanting to switch to Symphonic and transfer your catalog, you can simply enter your UPCs and ISRCs in our system when creating a release. Re-using your ISRCs will ensure your play counts will remain the same. All streaming data on a Spotify (and other DSPs) is retained due to the ISRC of the track.
If you already have released your content physically you need to use a different UPC code for the digital release (they are separate products). However, you can use the same ISRC's.
About Symphonic's Codes
The codes provided by Symphonic are codes registered with our company from GS1 (GS1 develops and maintains standards for barcodes). Symphonic is not identified as the rights holder unless we register the client's content with an organization via publishing administration or neighboring rights services and state we are a rights holder to collect on the client's behalf. On the UPC, we have a designation from GS1 as well as a unique identifier for every single release. The UPC combination is confirmed via the instructions that GS1 has given Symphonic.
If you'd like to obtain a visual barcode, there are many sites that can assist, but we recommend this tool.
